Role:
Description:
The original boardwalk was at the end of its design life. We designed a new wider structure as a place for cyclists and pedestrians
- The new width of 3300mm to 4000mm allows easy access for two passing couples
- We made the new accesses from beach apartments & restaurants smoother and safer
- The new boardwalk carries maintenance vehicles including an S300 Bobcat and a five tonne rubber tracked excavator
- We added concealed inserts for temporary handrails during times of beach erosion
Both we and the Council were committed to recycling materials in the design of the replacement boardwalk.
- 70% of the concrete footings for the original boardwalk were reused
- Many large timber logs from the original boardwalk were used in the new boardwalk The boardwalk also houses Council’s sand pipe, which replaces beach sand after storms
- Stainless steel valves have been installed at 45m centres so Council can replace beach sand at any location
